Shoulder To The Wheel Exhibition

Shoulder to the Wheel takes as its starting point the classic 1923 book by the Farnham wheelwright George Sturt, The Wheelwright’s Shop. The exhibition has been curated by the internationally-acclaimed writer and researcher Dr Glenn Adamson. Shoulder to the Wheel is presented in partnership with The Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading.

Gareth, alongside designer and creator Zoe Laughlin and Master Wheelwright Greg Rowland, was invited to respond to a single wagon wheel from the collection of The Museum of English Rural Life. The makers, from very different backgrounds, have created a diverse range of designs which can be seen at the Crafts Study Centre during the course of the exhibition.

Gareth responded to the challenge by speculating upon the evolution of the single wagon wheel held by the museum. His design results in a primordial wheel carved by axe from an entire cross-section of Elm, and a complimentary booklet hypothesising on the surprisingly complex evolution of the wheel.
